High Brow Fences

Talk about hunger, talk about love, talk about a place so wealthy that it lacks. To provoke one single genuine smile that comes from the heart, even this is taught and paid for. I walked among strangers today, passed them by on the path to my goal and back and only one solicited a smile that was forced that I didn’t know what to do with. How did we get this far in life that even a smile as natural and free needs to be faked, forced and squeezed as though the last of what’s left from an almost empty tube of toothpaste. All we can do is return the smile, I guess?…

palm trees behind gated
properties whose stature
keep only the wealthy fenced in;
water fountains limp as
lips sans desire.
is this how money lives
behind filigreed gates
without room for trespass
(and so if I shall fall
for one as handsome as he)
no passion can invade
no love could masticate
through these high prided walls
that I am left to stare with wonder
and disbelief outside its high brow fences
at how such walls could stand
without it ever touching life
without it ever knowing love
